Choosing the Right Permanent Makeup Technician For You

Permanent Makeup is rapidly growing in popularity. There are more options than ever when deciding where to go. This makes it so important to know exactly who is working on you.

Some facts to consider before you choose:

Licensing/Permit: All technicians are required by the health department to have a Tattoo Permit. This means location, sterility and techniques are evaluated annually. If your tech is “traveling” or working out of hotels, they are NOT properly permitted. They most likely are not insured either.

Training: All training programs offer Certification upon completion. Don’t be afraid to ask your tech about their training.

Pigments: There are so many choices when it comes to inks and every tech will have their preferred brand. Be sure to ask about color reliability. Have you ever seen someone with blue eyebrows? They didn’t start out that way, colors can change. Especially traditional tattoo inks. These inks can also spread around the corners of your eyes, creating a smeared or star burst look.

Medical History: You should be asked about all medications and certain medical conditions. There can be precautions, challenges or complications that may need to be planned for. If you’re not asked, walk away.

“One and Done” isn’t for everyone: Some technicians take a one appointment approach for their procedures. This can mean you end up with more than you wanted. Due to the delicate areas we are working on, removal is not always an option. It’s okay to be conservative as it’s easy to add more color later on. Most technicians plan on two visits for this reason.

Take NO for an answer: If your technician tells you something is not a good idea or it isn’t possible, they are saying it for a reason. Some areas should not be done and some conditions contraindicate permanent makeup. Unfortunately, there are folks out there willing to do it anyway, even if it is not in your best interest.  If you don’t get the answer you want, don’t just find someone who will say yes.

Once you choose a technician, communication is key. You should both be very clear in regards to ideas and expectations. Pictures are a great way to make sure you are on the same page.
