A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon blocks any part of the Sun. On Monday, August 21st, the solar eclipse will darken skies all the way from Oregon to South Carolina, along a stretch of land about 70 miles wide. We will not be able to view a total solar eclipse in the High Country, but a brief partial eclipse will be visible around 2:30 pm. While this is potentially a once in a lifetime event, the unfiltered sunlight will damage your eyes and can cause permanent blindness. Unfortunately, sunglasses will not provide sufficient protection for this event. The only safe way to look directly at the partially eclipsed Sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as "eclipse glasses". We will begin selling the recommended and certified eye wear in all three of our locations on Monday, August 7th for only $5.00!
